Let’s face it, nobody likes packing and preparing for furniture removal. The organisation, labelling, wrapping everything you own in pieces of newspaper and feeling like as if you’ve made no progress even though you’ve worked for hours – anyone can relate to this.
We’re here to make life a little easier, though, with these FIVE efficient packing tricks that can maximise your efficiency and minimise the heartache when you’re getting ready to move to a new home.
#1: Make A Moving Caddy
How many times have you misplaced the tape or scissors and had to go searching, derailing the whole packing process?
Make some time before you begin to create a moving caddy that stores everything you need including labels, a Sharpie, tape, scissors, and post-it notes, and put it in its space as soon as you’re done with it.
#2: Get Rid of the Rubbish
Too many of us make the mistake of packing things we no longer use because we can’t bear the thought of the extra work involved in cleaning things out. Start a separate pile of items you no longer need, and you’ll create less work for yourself when it comes time to unpack the house. The unwanted items still in good condition can be donated to charity.
#3: Label the Boxes
This one might sound simple enough, but you can get a little more creative than usual if you wish. Label each box with a general guide to what’s inside as well as where in the house it’s located.
You might even want to do colour coded labels that are easier to match and ask your house removalists to put them in the designated room once they arrive.
#4: Wrap Smartly
Instead of using newspaper for anything and everything, mix it up a bit. Your socks can be used to wrap around glasses, and clothes, towels and tea towels can cover other breakables.
To keep dinner plates from breaking, place one plastic plate in between each china plate and wrap together. Don’t pack too many things in a box, as it could collapse. Always try to pack the heaviest stuff at the bottom of each box.
#5: Don’t Forget the Small Pieces
One of the easiest mistakes we make when moving is that we forget the small but important items and focus on the big things.
When packing away screws, put them in a ziplock bag and label them according to where they came from. Use the tape to stick down cords onto the electronics they belong to. Put items from each drawer into one plastic bag and label it ‘Kitchen Drawer 1’, for example, so that you can put it all back in the same place with ease. These little jobs will save you hours in the unpacking stage.
